Continued cautious buying behavior and subdued demand contributed to generally stable-to-down market conditions. July is also in the middle of the main holiday season in the Nordics, which limits business activity.\nWildfires in southwest France have triggered large-scale salvage-logging operations across the country’s timber industry. At the same time, Finnish producers reported a wave of activity, including a planned sawmill closure, an acquisition and a capacity investment.\n“There have been some extended [sawmill] summer breaks in Sweden [due to the market situation], with production in July being lower”, a sawn timber producer said. “Stock levels are lower than usual”, they added.\nSign up now for free access to upcoming new European sawn timber prices. \n\n \n\n\n\n    \n\nIn Germany, spruce sawfalling grades moved slightly lower month on month. Midpoints for the 44-50×150 mm and 63×150 mm grades declined by around 1.5%, while the 50×100 mm grade slipped by 0.8%. In France and Benelux, all tracked spruce grades remained unchanged from June and prices continued to move sideways.\nIn the UK, both spruce sawfalling grades held steady from June levels. Pine assessments showed mixed developments. Pine V 38×150 mm declined by €5 per cubic meter at both ends of the assessed range, resulting in a midpoint decrease of 1.7% month on month. Pine US 50×150 mm, Pine V 25×100 mm and Pine VI 25×125 mm were unchanged from June levels, although all three grades remained below their May levels following declines recorded earlier in the second quarter.\nWildfire impact on timber supply in France\nWildfires that swept across areas of France in July, mainly in the Gironde and Landes regions, have left the country’s timber industry facing immense salvage-logging operations.\nThe Gironde fire burned around 42,000 hectares over nine days before being contained on July 30, the French interior minister Laurent Nunez said.\nAccording to French reports, around 40,000 hectares of that area was maritime pine forest, equivalent to an estimated 3.5 million cubic meters of standing timber. There are further estimates of fire-damaged timber volume across France running as high as 7 million m³.  Separately, more than 35,000 metric tons of trees were felled to create firebreaks while the fires were still active.\nThe overall economic impact on France’s timber sector is estimated at more than €500 million ($540 million).\nIt has been stated that the most heavily burned material is expected to be directed to heating pellet production, while less-damaged wood could still supply the pallet, paper, plywood and batten markets.\nThe timing of salvage volumes entering the market could cause concern for regional supply. Once large-scale felling begins, France is expected to see a compressed influx of pine sawlogs this autumn, adding to an already loose supply picture across Europe.\nAs stated by market participants, the combined volume of forced fellings from storm and fire damage across Europe is likely to put further pressure on softwood prices in the fourth quarter.\nFinland: Stora Enso plans a sawmill closure, Binderholz buys Kuhmo, Keitele invests in production capacity increase\nLate summer has been eventful for Finnish sawn timber producers, with announcements of a planned mill closure, layoffs, an acquisition and a major investment.\nStora Enso announced that it plans to permanently close its 200,000-cubic-meter-per-year Veitsiluoto pine sawmill in northern Finland to improve efficiency, profitability and competitiveness in line with its strategy. This is part of the company’s plan to centralize pine timber to its other sawmills in Northern Finland, particularly Oulu and Kalajoki. Stora Enso has initiated change negotiations based on this announcement, covering all of the approximately 60 employees of the sawmill.\nIf the plan is implemented, the sawmill will not restart production after its continuing temporary production standstill. The company stated that no decisions on the planned closure or possible personnel reductions will be made before the negotiations have been concluded.\nStora Enso also announced that it was launching change negotiations at its Uimaharju business unit in Joensuu, eastern Finland. The company aims to improve competitiveness, efficiency, and profitability of the Uimaharju pulp mill and 240,000-cubic-meter-per-year sawmill, affecting approximately 380 workers across all personnel groups.\nThe company says continuing global economic uncertainty and weak, volatile market demand have created challenging business conditions, prompting the need to identify new ways of working and increase synergies within the unit.\nAustrian sawmilling and wood products company binderholz plans to acquire a Finnish sawmiller, Kuhmo, subject to approval by the relevant competition authorities. Kuhmo produces about 500,000 cubic meters of sawn timber annually, with production comprising 80% pine products and 20% spruce products. The company is based in the town of Kuhmo in northeastern Finland, where its sawmill is located.\nbinderholz already operates two sawmills in Eastern Finland, in Lieksa and Nurmes. The company is running change negotiations at these mills for permanent and temporary layoffs. The annual combined production capacity of these facilities is estimated at around 500,000 cubic meters per year of spruce and pine sawn timber.\nThe Finnish sawmiller Keitele plans to invest €40 million in the feed and debarking sections of the small-scale timber line at its Keitele sawmill, located in central Finland, in autumn 2027.\nAccording to the company, “the new equipment will significantly improve the quality of log debarking and increase the capacity of the small-sized tree line by almost 50 percent.” Keitele aims to increase the sawmill’s annual production capacity from the current 420,000 cubic meters to 600,000 cubic meters in two-shift operation.\nKoskisen grows sales despite weak market conditions in H1\nFinnish wood products manufacturer Koskisen increased its turnover by more than €30 million ($35 million) in the first half of 2026, marking its tenth consecutive quarter of growth, despite a challenging market environment and high raw material costs. The growth stems, for example, from investments in production capacity and recent acquisitions.\nSecond-quarter turnover reached €104.4 million, up by about 16% year on year, while first-half turnover totaled €209.4 million (+19%). Net profit stood at €2.1 million in the second quarter (-59%) and €3.0 million for the first half (-68%).\nHigher sawn timber and birch plywood deliveries supported sales growth, but profitability remained under pressure from elevated log prices, lower by-product chip prices and weak construction activity subduing the Northern European market. However, stronger construction markets in southern Europe, particularly Spain, supported demand for some products, the company said.\nThe company stated in its earnings call that the increased sawlog costs combined with decreased pulpwood prices, which affect byproduct fiber prices, are difficult for the business. The fiber material they buy in the form of sawlogs is more expensive, but the resale prices are lower due to the recent decrease in pulpwood prices, which strains their profitability.\nKoskisen said raw material procurement and log inventories remained on target. The company also increased annual production capacity at its Järvelä sawmill to 450,000 cubic meters through drying capacity investments, while technical issues at its new sawmill are gradually being resolved.\nLooking ahead, Koskisen expects sawn timber prices to remain stable in the third quarter.\nFinnish sawlog prices record a small dip in July during summer lullDuring the main holiday season in Finland, the roundwood market is also quieter than other times of the year. Total sawlog trading in July dropped to less than half of that in June, falling by 58%. The total trade volume was still about 5% higher than in July 2025, logging a minimal less than 1% increase in pine, but over 8% increase in spruce.\nStanding-sale prices for softwood sawlogs in Finland softened slightly in July, according to Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) data. The average price for pine sawlogs decreased to €77.90 per cubic meter, while spruce sawlogs declined to €83.14 per cubic meter. Compared with June, pine prices fell by 0.8% and spruce prices by 0.6%.\nDespite the monthly declines, the upward trend that began at the start of the year remained largely intact. Compared with the January lows, average pine sawlog prices were still 6.5% higher in July, while spruce prices had increased by 7.7%.\nHowever, prices remained below the levels seen a year earlier. Compared with July 2025, pine sawlogs were priced 5.4% lower, while spruce sawlogs were 1.5% below their level a year ago. Where prices will head after the summer will be clearer when both sellers and buyers return from their summer hiatus.\nIn Sweden, the sawlog prices have reportedly been down, with the windfalls from the Christmas storms still impacting the pine supply.\nMarket outlook\nMarket participants entered the third quarter with cautious expectations. One Nordic producer described activity as stable rather than declining, though quieter than anticipated, with the expected springtime pick-up in demand failing to materialize.\nSpruce demand was described as healthy, while pine remains more difficult. Some Swedish producers have kept prices aggressive since before the summer break, though it remains unclear whether this reflects genuine third-quarter pricing or a holdover from late in the second quarter, reported one market participant.\nCentral European producer stocks are high, with fast delivery available across most construction-timber dimensions.
