The Japanese government will launch full-scale pilot projects in the fiscal year starting April to develop AI systems tailored to specific industries and tasks in sectors such as health care and public services, sources said.

The government aims for AI systems to be utilized in the development of cancer treatments, decision-making regarding the dispatch of ambulances and other areas. By utilizing the "stronger and more prosperous Japan" investment framework championed by the Cabinet of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, the government aims to accelerate the adoption of AI, an area where Japan has fallen behind other nations.

The Cabinet Office, which will serve as the coordinating body, is considering including a lump-sum allocation of 100.8 billion yen in its budget request for next fiscal year to cover project costs for relevant ministries and agencies.

AI developed specifically for particular jobs or tasks is referred to as domain-specific AI or vertical AI. It is characterized by its comprehension of industry-specific rules and terminology.

In July, the government designated 19 sectors -- including manufacturing, construction and police operations -- where there are expectations regarding the use of vertical AI. Pilot projects will be carried out in accordance with this designation.

The Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry will work on the development and demonstration of an AI system that analyzes computed tomography (CT) images and other data to detect diseases at an early stage. The Internal Affairs and Communications Ministry is considering the development of a system to support decision-making of operators of a helpline used by people who are unsure whether to call an ambulance through analysis of call content.
