Consumer Cos Down After Inflation Data

Consumer companies fell slightly after a mixed round of earnings and a hot reading of inflation.

The Personal Consumption Expenditures price index rose 3.7% on an annual basis in July, well above the Federal Reserve's target.

Abercrombie & Fitch rallied after tariff refunds and resilient demand bolstered its quarterly profit.

Williams-Sonoma shares fell even after the premium home-goods purveyor posted earnings ahead of Wall Street expectations.

Department-store chain Kohl's rose slightly.

J.M. Smucker rose after the maker of Jif peanut butter, Folger's coffee and other processed food boosted its growth projection for the year.

Bath & Body Works rose after the toiletries chain cited progress in turnaround efforts.
