Residents Downstream in Gyirong County Relocated to Safety

Authorities have confirmed that all threatened residents in the lower reaches of Gyirong County, Shigatse City, including those in Seqiong Village and Labi Village, have been safely relocated.

According to the regional Department of Natural Resources, an emergency response at the highest level for geological disasters was activated immediately after the incident, under the direction of the regional Party committee and government. Three task force teams, equipped with drones, satellite phones, and Beidou terminal devices, were dispatched to the site that afternoon.

A working group from the Ministry of Natural Resources has now arrived at the front line, joining regional officials to coordinate emergency relief operations. Field investigations revealed that a glacier collapse on the Nepalese side scoured glacial moraine material in the channel, forming a debris flow that blocked the Donglin Zangbu River, subsequently triggering a flood and mudslide downstream.

In Salle Township, a massive landslide on the slope opposite Guobang Village has created a barrier lake, with an estimated dam height of approximately 50 meters and a length exceeding 3,000 meters, posing a severe threat to downstream areas. On the 27th, the ministry's working group convened an emergency response meeting, outlining four key tasks: investigating the source of the glacier collapse to assess secondary risks, monitoring the barrier lake's water levels and issuing timely warnings, comparing pre- and post-disaster imagery to support search and rescue operations, and inspecting resettlement sites and road infrastructure for potential hazards.

The Department of Natural Resources has issued an urgent notice requiring the full implementation of the pre-disaster warning and response mechanisms, alongside a 24-hour duty system across the region, to reinforce disaster prevention responsibilities and safeguard the lives and property of the public.
