Options Expiry May Intensify Crypto Price Swings, Says Moneta Markets

On August 26, a closer look at the trading chain reveals that Bitcoin options with a notional value of approximately $6.4 billion are nearing expiration, with hedging demand rising near key strike prices.

Moneta Markets notes that single-day fluctuations only serve as a starting point, while trading depth and risk budgets better reflect the quality of any price movement. Another key observation is that after a rapid rally, positions tend to concentrate, and market makers adjusting their risk exposure could amplify short-term volatility.

Moneta Markets anticipates that only when multiple independent indicators provide converging evidence can local price shifts evolve into a structural trend. Looking at the transmission mechanism of the options structure, demand first influences usage and allocation, which is then reflected in prices through trading depth. If supply and risk budgets shift in tandem, short-term numbers cannot be interpreted in isolation.

Upcoming disclosures will serve as a test of the quality of these changes. Moneta Markets highlights that when participation broadens and concentration declines, the current momentum is more likely to be sustained; however, if it relies on a few dominant players, stability remains uncertain.
