Pudong Airport Sees Summer Travel Boom With 110,000 Daily Passengers

Shanghai's Pudong International Airport experienced a bustling summer travel season, handling a total of 6.7 million出入境 passenger trips between July and August. The口岸 averaged nearly 110,000 crossings daily, maintaining a consistently high passenger flow throughout the period, according to official data.

Demand from mainland Chinese residents for family vacations, study tours, and graduation trips surged during this period. Meanwhile, the number of foreign visitors arriving in China for tourism also climbed notably. In response, the Shanghai Airport Immigration Inspection Station implemented detailed measures to ensure smooth and efficient passage for all travelers while maintaining strict security protocols.

Families and students were the dominant groups traveling abroad this summer. Statistics from the immigration authorities indicate that 2.2 million mainland residents departed from Pudong International Airport during the summer months. Among them, the proportion of minors under 14 years old saw a marked increase, with most young travelers accompanied by two to three family members.

In terms of travel destinations, family trips primarily focused on traditional hotspots such as Hong Kong, Macau, Southeast Asia, and South Korea. Summer study tours favored long-haul destinations in Europe, the Americas, and Australia, with routes to cities like Venice and Barcelona proving particularly popular among student travelers.

To accommodate the peak in outbound travel, the Shanghai Airport Immigration Inspection Station optimized its clearance procedures. Additional personnel were deployed in waiting areas to guide passengers, with dedicated staff helping eligible mainland residents use the automated e-channels for immediate processing. Special assistance was provided for the elderly, disabled, pregnant women, and others with special needs throughout the entire process.

Family groups received personalized guidance that took them from the waiting area directly to the inspection counters, allowing members to complete formalities together in a single visit. This approach balanced efficiency with a warm, service-oriented experience for all passengers.

While outbound tourism flourished, inbound travel to China also continued to gain momentum. During the summer months, Pudong International Airport processed over 900,000 foreign arrivals, a 20 percent increase compared to the same period last year. Notably, travelers using visa-free entry accounted for 62 percent of all foreign arrivals, highlighting Shanghai's position as the leading gateway for inbound tourism to China.

South Korean nationals topped the list of inbound visitors by nationality, followed by travelers from Russia, Japan, the United States, Thailand, and Malaysia. An interesting trend emerged as the summer season drew to a close: while the number of mainland residents began to decline, foreign visitors arriving for tourism and business exhibitions continued to rise.

Mr. Moritz, a German businessman attending the International Tire and Wheel Expo in Shanghai, shared his experience: "China's tire market is enormous. I look forward to seeing the strength of Chinese brands at the exhibition. The immigration clearance was also very fast."

To manage the sustained high volume of inbound passengers, the Shanghai Airport Immigration Inspection Station leverages self-developed software, including a precision duty-assistance system and scheduling management program. These tools provide real-time forecasts of passenger flow, allowing authorities to dynamically adjust staffing levels based on flight schedules and traveler numbers, shifting operational decision-making from experience to data-driven analysis.

The station has also fully upgraded the intelligent inspection counters in both the departure and arrival areas of Terminal 2. Foreign arrivals are now processed using a categorized inspection approach, with scientifically designed passenger diversion and checkpoint configurations to minimize waiting times. Additionally, a 100-person multilingual volunteer team provides round-the-clock emergency translation and policy consultation services, ensuring foreign visitors experience seamless communication upon arrival.

Yang Ming, Director of the Immigration Inspection Division at the Shanghai Airport Station, emphasized the results: "Through these measures, we have maintained the average waiting time for foreign arrivals within 30 minutes even during peak periods. Our efficient border inspection services support Shanghai's goal of building a world-class business environment."
