Every summer, the "back-to-school tech trio" of laptops, tablets, and smartphones for university freshmen hits its peak sales season. This year, however, rising prices across the board are putting significant strain on parents' wallets.
One mother of an incoming freshman, surnamed Chen, couldn't help but complain about the escalating costs. "I originally thought a 10,000-yuan budget for a high-spec laptop would be more than enough, but prices have been climbing all year. The models I liked from several major brands are all over 10,000 yuan now," she said. Adding a new phone to the mix pushes the total budget to a staggering 20,000 yuan. "Luckily, my child decided to skip the tablet and put that money towards the laptop instead, or we’d really be struggling to keep up."
The ripple effect of rising costs for memory, graphics cards, and chips has driven up the price of the entire back-to-school tech trio. A laptop that cost a certain price in June had already jumped by over 1,000 yuan by the end of August, just two months later.
A dealer surnamed Dai, who runs a business in the Hangzhou communications equipment market, noted that while the back-to-school season usually brings in students looking to upgrade their devices, the current prices are scaring them off. "Hard drive prices have more than doubled, jumping from around 400 yuan to 1,000 yuan. Memory prices are always volatile anyway; they had a dip a couple of months back, but now they're climbing again. Since we're a wholesale market, our retail prices don't offer as much of a discount as online promotions."
The price increases aren't limited to computers. Smartphone prices are also on the rise following an official price hike by chip giant Qualcomm. "As soon as chip prices go up, all Android phones are affected," Mr. Dai said with a resigned shake of his head.
The trend extends to accessories popular with younger children as well. The latest model of the popular Xiaotiancai smartwatch has seen its price increase. The new Z12 model carries an official retail price of 2,699 yuan, which is 300 yuan more than the launch price of its predecessor, the Z11.
Despite the financial pain, parents are still shelling out for essential laptops. "School is about to start and we can't put it off any longer. Prices have gone up again and the dealer says a drop isn't likely in the short term, so we decided to buy now. If it wasn't a necessity, I'd wait for the year-end sales to see if they get cheaper," one parent admitted. Another parent shared a different strategy: "Unless a student's major requires it, a lighter and more affordable laptop is often sufficient. We set a budget for our child, and if they picked something over it, they'd have to make up the difference with their own savings."
Industry insiders attribute this round of price increases to a structural restructuring of global memory chip production capacity. The primary driver is the powerful "siphoning effect" that the explosive demand for AI computing power has on storage capacity. Manufacturers like Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron have shifted their advanced production lines towards the more profitable AI-specific high-bandwidth memory, squeezing the capacity available for consumer-grade products.
Li Xin, an associate researcher and doctoral supervisor at the School of Electrical Engineering at Southeast University, believes the price pressure is being passed down from the top and originates at the production end. The rapid expansion of AI data centers is consuming a large portion of CPU, GPU, and memory capacity. Since AI chips offer higher profit margins, manufacturers prioritize supply for the AI sector, reducing the supply for consumer electronics.
Regarding future price trends, Li Xin suggests this current price surge cycle might last longer than many anticipate. "Building new production facilities and ramping up capacity is a gradual process, so we can expect chip prices to continue rising for at least the next year or so."
In the face of these rising hardware costs, consumers should plan their purchases rationally and buy based on their actual needs. In the meantime, domestic companies in the memory chip and computing hardware sectors are accelerating their independent innovation and production expansion efforts. As the industry chain matures and new capacity comes online, the market's supply-demand dynamics are expected to improve.
