Tech Titans Set to Address G20 Ministerial as US Pushes for Light-Touch AI Rules

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and former White House AI affairs chief David Sacks are scheduled to address a technology-focused G20 ministerial meeting in North Carolina next week, according to sources familiar with the matter. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman are also expected to participate in the event, which is being organized by White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Director Michael Kratsios and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick as a precursor to this year's G20 summit.

President Donald Trump will host the G20 leaders' summit in December at his golf club in Doral, Florida. Sources indicate that Musk and Sacks are slated to speak on the first day of the meeting, September 1, alongside Meta Platforms President Dina Powell McCormick, who previously served as deputy national security adviser during Trump's first term. The individuals requested anonymity because the meeting agenda has not yet been made public.

One of the sources noted that all three speakers will address the gathering via video link. Altman and Huang are scheduled to appear on the second day, with that session led by the U.S. Department of Commerce. Axios had previously reported on the second day's speakers.

The primary objective of Kratsios' meeting is to secure agreement among G20 members, including Japan, Saudi Arabia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and France, on a non-binding framework that would encourage governments to adopt a more permissive, less interventionist approach to regulating emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence. According to one source, the framework would subsequently be submitted as a joint statement for consideration at the December G20 leaders' summit.

Officials from the White House and the Commerce Department did not immediately respond to requests for comment. An OpenAI spokesperson confirmed Altman's planned attendance, while a Meta spokesperson did not immediately respond. Representatives for Musk and Sacks also did not respond to inquiries.
