The Abu Dhabi Investment Council, managing assets worth $160 billion, has appointed Lori Hall-Kim as chief investment officer for its private equity business, bringing on board a veteran with 25 years of experience across several of the world’s leading pension funds to its fast-expanding team.

According to a statement released on Wednesday, Hall-Kim joins the Abu Dhabi Investment Council from the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan. She had joined the Canadian pension institution in 2022, where she oversaw substantial growth in its private equity portfolio, with net assets climbing from roughly C$20 billion to C$24.2 billion (approximately $17.4 billion).

Her LinkedIn profile shows she previously spent six years in the private equity division at the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board. Earlier in her career, she helped establish the London office of the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan and ran its European fund and co-investment operations for 11 years.

The Abu Dhabi Investment Council has emerged as one of the most aggressive funds in Abu Dhabi's investment landscape. Hall-Kim will report to Alain Carill, executive director of private equity, and will be responsible for the overall investment work of the division.

This recruitment further strengthens the Abu Dhabi Investment Council's talent pool, with team members including Ben Samild, former chief investment officer of Australia's Future Fund, and Edward Winter, who previously worked at Global Infrastructure Partners.

Carill stated in the announcement: "Lori excels at building and managing high-yield investment portfolios. Her expertise will be critical as we continue to expand across global private markets, with a focus on sustainable growth and long-term value creation."

This appointment reflects Abu Dhabi's broader strategic direction, as sovereign institutions allocate significant capital to global private markets while aggressively building out professional investment talent.

Established in 2007 and serving as the indirect investment platform of Mubadala Investment Company, the Abu Dhabi Investment Council manages over $160 billion in assets, with investments spanning the United States, Europe, the UK, and Asia. Its private equity portfolio covers buyouts, venture capital, growth equity, and co-investments, with more than 500 cumulative investments globally, partnering with institutions including Bain Capital, Sequoia Capital, and AH Equity Partners.

Under the leadership of Chief Executive Saeed Al Mazrouei, the Abu Dhabi Investment Council has shifted away from its historically low-profile approach, continuously venturing into new investment tracks. The fund has established a secondaries business staffed by 12 professionals, with plans to deploy up to $10 billion over three years. Meanwhile, it has increased allocations to bitcoin, private credit, insurance, and hedge funds, targeting a return rate of no less than 10%.
